Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Japan’s most significant monasteries, founded in 788 by the monk Saicho. Located on Mount Hiei, which straddles the border between Kyoto and Shiga, the temple complex is known for its deep historical and spiritual significance. Enryaku-ji served as a major center for Buddhist learning and has trained many influential monks. The complex is divided into three main areas: Todo, Saito, and Yokawa, each offering unique historical structures, including the main hall, Konpon Chu-do. Visitors can explore various temple buildings, enjoy serene walking trails through the forest, and take in panoramic views of Kyoto and Lake Biwa. The temple is accessible via the Sakamoto Cablecar and offers facilities such as prayer rooms, coin lockers, and restrooms.
