Its most distinctive feature is the collection of 1,200 stone rakan statues, each carved with a unique expression and pose, reflecting various aspects of human emotion and experience. These statues were created during a restoration project in the 1980s under the guidance of sculptor and monk Kocho Nishimura, who encouraged both amateur and professional artists to contribute, resulting in a diverse and whimsical array of figures. The temple's serene atmosphere, combined with the moss-covered sculptures, provides a contemplative experience, making it a hidden gem away from Kyoto's more frequented sites.
