MK Guide Recommends
Murin-an Garden, constructed between 1894 and 1896, was the private villa of statesman Yamagata Aritomo. Designed by renowned gardener Ogawa Jihei VII, the garden showcases a naturalistic landscape that incorporates the Higashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery. The grounds encompass a serene pond fed by a meandering stream sourced from the Lake Biwa Canal, a picturesque waterfall, and meticulously maintained lawns. The property includes a traditional Japanese-style villa, a Western-style house reflecting the Meiji-era's blend of cultures, and a teahouse nestled among the trees. Visitors can experience the harmonious integration of architecture and nature, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of Kyoto.
