MK Guide Recommends

Nestled in the picturesque Arashiyama area, Giōji Temple offers visitors a serene retreat characterized by its verdant moss garden and dense foliage. The temple's main hall, a quaint thatched-roof structure, houses a statue of Dainichi Nyorai, the Buddha of Light. Giōji is steeped in history and literature, notably linked to the tale of Giō, a dancer who, after a tragic love affair with the Heike Clan's leader Taira no Kiyomori, sought solace here as a Buddhist nun. Wooden statues of Giō, her family, and Kiyomori are enshrined within, commemorating this poignant story. The temple grounds are particularly enchanting during autumn, when the maple leaves turn vibrant hues, contrasting beautifully with the emerald moss.
