MK Guide Recommends
Founded in 1601 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, Enkōji Temple began as an educational institution open to both monks and the general public. Nestled near the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, the temple is celebrated for its picturesque gardens that showcase seasonal beauty year-round. Visitors can explore the Honryu-tei rock garden, designed to evoke a "Running Dragon," and a lush moss garden adorned with maple trees that burst into brilliant colors each autumn. The temple grounds also feature a suikinkutsu, a unique musical ornament that produces soothing sounds as water drips into an underground chamber. A bamboo grove and a hilltop vantage point offer panoramic views of Kyoto's northern landscape, making Enkōji a haven for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
